Animal collagen

Collagen is one of the hall-marks of the animals, and is an essential structural protein that plays a key role in such areas as ligament and the skin. It seems, moreover, to be unique to the animals, Its construction is relatively simple and employs three intertwined helices of amino-acids with characteristic triplet repeats of Glycine-Proline-Y (where Y is another amino acid); in addition hydroxyproline is also widely used.

Functions of Collagen

Collagen fibers support body tissues, plus collagen is a major component of the extracellular matrix that supports cells. Collagen and keratin give the skin its strength, waterproofing, and elasticity. Loss of collagen is a cause of wrinkles.
Connective tissue consists primarily of collagen. Collagen forms fibrils that provide the structure for fibrous tissue, such as ligaments, tendons and skin. Collagen also is found in cartilage, bone, blood vessels, the cornea of the eye, intervertebral discs, muscles, and the gastrointestinal tract.

Other Uses of Collagen

Collagen is one of the proteins that gives strength and flexibility to animal hides and leather. Collagen is used in cosmetic treatments and burn surgery.

What is curcumin?

Curcumin, is an anti-inflammatory molecule in the turmeric root, a relative of ginger. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal preparation and a preservative and coloring agent in foods. Curcumin was isolated as the major yellow pigment in turmeric; chemically diferulomethane, and has a polyphenolic molecular structure similar to other plant pigments. This polyphenols share in common anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties with associated health benefits.

How Curcumin actually helps in healing wounds:

  • The antibiotic action prevents bacterial infection of the wounds by bacteria such as E.coli, staphylococcus and bacillus.
  • Anti-inflammatory action relieves inflammation.
  • The analgesic action relives pain.
  • Helps in formation of new skin cells and closes the wound.
